LUDHIANA: In the wake of rising prices of milk, representatives of Belan Brigade in the city would move the Punjab and Haryana high court against the administration and the state government. Several residents in the city are also saying that they will choose NOTA if candidates fail to find a solution to the problem.
Citing examples of countries like the US and Pakistan, that have a price control board for essential items, they also plan to appeal to the government to have a Punjab milk board.
The sudden increase in milk prices has hit consumers hard in the city, with some active NGOs planning to take major steps to curb it. The Belan brigade in the city comprising members of two NGOs namely Navkiran Women Welfare Association and Mahatar Sathi Jagriti Manch have decided to file a petition in the high court against the administration and the state government.
"As per the Consumer Protection Act 1986 that tags milk as one of the 19 other essential items, there has to be a check on its price. We are definitely going to raise our voice against this menace and put an end to this milk-mafia in the city. This is equivalent to the drug-mafia only with greater user-base", said Kimti Lal, one of the head-campaigners of the Belan Brigade.
A country like Pakistan has a control board, the price control and prevention of profiteering and hoarding act that helps keep a check on the prices of an essential item like milk. "When a country like Pakistan can have it, why not us," he asked.
